The plaque commemorates the centenary of Fort Glanville from 1880 to 1980.

Built in 1878, the fort was only in service for two decades before being decommissioned, spending later years being used in may different ways including a caravan park and internment centre, before being restored to its original state.

The fort was constructed in the height of the cold war between England and Russia, and with fears that Russian would expand their territory and attack English settlements that were far from the England, it was ordered that the construction of the fort to protect South Australia.

This plaque was unveiled by the Hon. David Wotton, M. P., Minister of Environment, to mark the centenary of Fort Glanville on 2nd October, 1989.

The Fort which was opened in 1880 was built to protect Port Adelaide form naval attack
