The tree commemorates United States of America and Australian service personnel who have died in service or been killed in action, and are buried in foreign lands.

Operation Crowflight which is mentioned on the plaque was a United States high altitude air sam­pling project, based at East Sale R.A.A.F. Base between 1960 and 1962, operating Lockheed U-2 and Martin RB-57 aircraft.
