HMAS Cerberus Chapel of St MarkPrint Page
The chapel was erected in memory of the Officers and Men of the Royal Australian Navy of Protestant denominations who died in service or were killed in action during World War One and World War Two. The chapel was opened on the 15 May 1954 by Sir Dallas Brooks.
A memorial chapel is to be built at Flinders Naval Depot in memory of the members of the Royal Australian Navy who paid the supreme sacrifice during the two world wars. Flinders Naval Depot, is the Premier Naval Establishment of the R.A.N., and the Chapel will be Australia's only Naval Memorial to those who died. The Chapel which will cost £60,000 (£23,000 is already in hand) will meet a long felt want at Flinders Naval Depot, for both prior to the war and at present, Church services of all denominations were held in the Drill Hall which was used also for dances and cinema shows. It is hoped that each State will give 5,000 towards this worthy object. The Lord Mayor of Sydney has offered to accept donations. The Roman Catholics have already completed their Memorial Chapel at Flinders of which they may well be proud. The proposed Memorial Chapel is for the use of all other denominations.
