The church was erected as a war memorial to commemorate those who died in service or were killed in action in World War One, World War Two and the Korean War.

The church replaced the previous church which was destroyed by a cyclone in 1949.

This stone was laid by His Excellency, the Governor Lt Gen Sir John D. Lavarack K.C.M.G., K.C.M.O., C.B., D.S.O.
