The plaque commemorates the H.M.S. Ganges, a shore based training ship for 15 year old naval recruits of the Royal Navy which operated from 1905-1975 at Shotley Gate near Ipswich, Suffolk in England.
Members of the H.M.S. Ganges would undergo rigorous training, which included military drills, seamanship, gunnery, communications and engineering.
