The Memorial Walk commemorates the soldiers who died or were killed overseas whilst serving with the Royal Australian Regiment RAR).
It consists of a 700 metre avenue surrounded by more than 1000 native Australian trees. On selected trees that is a plaque bearing the name and service details of each soldier who lost their lives. The Walk is divided into the RAR’s operational theatre areas (Japan, Korea, Malaya, Malaysia – Sarawak, Vietnam, Somalia, The Solomons, East Timor, Iraq and Afghanistan) in which the memorial plaques/trees are placed.
The origins of the Royal Australian Regiment (or RAR) lies in the decision made by the Australian Government to raise a force for occupation duties in Japan at the end of the Second World War. It was originally formed in 1948 as a three battalion regiment; however, since then its size has fluctuated as battalions have been raised, amalgamated or disbanded in accordance with the Australian government's strategic requirements.
