Aboriginal Servicemen & Women Print Page

The plaque on the War Memorial commemorates the Aboriginal people who served in the various conflicts in which Australia has been involved since the South African (Boer) War.
In war, many Indigenous soldiers found a camaraderie and respect which crossed cultural boundaries. But even to be allowed to serve in conflicts up to the 1960s, they were forced to denounce their Aboriginality and were paid less than their European counterparts. Until recently their service to their country in wartime was largely unrecognised.
