Meander District Honour RollPrint Page Print this page

Photographs supplied by Arthur Garland

The wooden honour roll commemorates those from the district who served in World War One.

Empire Day was celebrated at Meander State School. In the morning the scholars were put through the Empire celebrations by the head teacher (Mr Parsons). Souvenirs were shown by Mr Parsons which he brought from the great war. He also gave interesting speeches about them. The Union Jack was hoisted, and saluted by the children.  In the afternoon football was played by the schoolboys, but the girls` games were marred by rain.  In the evening the honor roll was unveiled by Mr Pullen, M.H.A.,  and very interesting speeches were given.

The machine gun was placed under the honor roll. Names of the boys who went to the war from Meander, and who gave their lives for King and country are on the honor roll. Songs given by Mrs Parsons and Mr Pullen. The attendance would have been large only for rain falling. The honor roll which was unveiled at Meander was designed and made in W.C. Cameron`s joinery works and was of nicely grained polished Tasmanian blackwood with gold lettering.
