The monument depicts the the battle at Rabual in New Guinea during World War One and commemorates Seaman William Williams who was Australia's first casualty of the war.

It also commemorates Captain Brian Pockley of the Army Medical Corps who assisted the mortally wounded Williams and carried him back to HMAS Berrima. Captain Pockley was mortally wounded and died after this event.

The monument also lists the Australian casualties of World War One.
