The War Memorial commemorates those from the district who died in service or were killed in action in World War One.

The Commissioner of Public Works (Hon. W. Hague), accompanied by the Engineer-in-Chief (Mr. J. G. Stewart), the Resident Engineer (Mr. B. Ranford), Messrs. J. G. Moseley and J. H. Chapman, M.P.'s, and Mr. R. Leaney (shorthand writer), arrived at Cowell by the Wandana on Thursday night, March 16.

The Minister was met by the Chairman of the Council (Mr. S. B. Warnes), Mr. Nicholson, and other prominent townsmen. On the following morning the Minister opened a new public school at Arno Bay, and also unveiled an obelisk in memory of local fallen soldiers.
