The memorial recognises the unconditional and loyal service that police dogs have played and continue to play in service of all Queenslanders. The memorial is surrounded by over a dozen named stones representing past service dogs.

Queensland was home to one of the earliest known uses of police dogs in Australia, when they were first introduced for an experimental trial between 1912 and 1917. However it wasn't until 1972 that the dog squad as we know it commenced earning a reputation as an integral arm of effective state wide policing.

From 1912 to the present day, more than 400 canines have graduated from the QPS Dog Squad training facility.
