The plaque signifies a place of reflection for those who have lost a loved one to bullying. The plaque also recognises bullying victim Allem Halkic, an Altona Meadows 17-year-old teenager who took his own life in 2009. The plaque is a symbol for Allem and in the campaign against bullying.
Seventeen-year-old Allem Halkic received threatening text messages for several months before committing suicide. Allem’s parents Dina and Ali were then involved in Australia’s first prosecution over cyber bullying. A Victorian magistrate ruled that his suicide was the result of bullying.
