The monument commemorates the Melton (Coconut) Primary School which operated from 1897 to March 1942 at this site. 

A school opened in 1897 (Coconut) on section 104, Hundred of Clinton.  It became ‘Melton’ in 1915 and closed in 1942.

Original stepping stone of school unveiled by former pupils Bessie Degner and Vera Price on Sunday 21st April 1991
