The cross commemorates the Millennium of Christianity in Ukraine from 988 to 1988.

In 1988, Ukrainians throughout the world celebrated the Millennium of Christianity in Ukraine, the 1,000th anniversary of a Christian heritage whose roots date back to 988 with the baptism of the people of Kievan Rus' on the banks of the Dnieper River by Prince Volodymyr the Great.
