Fallen Jockeys Memorial Print Page
The Fallen Jockeys memorial commemorates 870 jockeys who have been killed in race falls throughout Australia. The monument consists of a bronze figure of a jockey standing 1.8m tall with a base of 1.2 metres. The names of the fallen appear alphabetically on the ten individual pillars.
The jockey in the memorial in a sense anonymous, is based on famed rider Hughie Cairns who was killed in a hurdle race at Moonee Valley in 1929.
Australian Jockeys are elite athletes who quite literally place their lives on the line every time they compete in a race. Sadly, serious injuries are a frequent occurrence and over 800 riders have lost their lives since racing first began.
