The monument commemorates the seven miners who were killed in the explosion at the Great Extended Hustlers Mine on the 2nd May 1914.
On 2 May 1914, an explosion occured at the Great Extended Hustler’s Mine in Bendigo, Victoria. The explosion killed the seven men working on the 13th level of the mine who were at a depth of 321 metres. A number of other men working further below were injured as a result of the fumes generated by an air compressor which had been damaged in the explosion. They were also trapped underground for some time, unable to move due to thick smoke.

Below us lies the old mine workings of
"The Great Extended Hustlers Mine" 1865 - 1921,
consisting of 31 levels, to a depth of 3454ft (1053m).
On the 2nd May 1914, at about 10 pm, an explosion
occurred on the 13th level at 1053 ft (321m).
All seven miners working at that level were killed.
Five widows and ten children were left to mourn their loss.
This was the worst mining accident on the Bendigo Goldfields.
