The cairn marks the site of the Camp Mountain train crash in 1947. 

In 1947, a picnic train organised by the Customs and Excise Department crashed with the loss of sixteen lives. Three of the dead were children and thirty-eight people were injured. This was Queensland`s worst rail disaster.
