The plaque records that the unmarked children`s graves are those who were killed by disease due to the unsanitary conditions around the Moonta mine.

February 1870 arrived with heat and dust and at the appropriately named Cemetery Flat, children played in rotting household refuse and effluent from surface drains. In house after house there were to be found poor fever-stricken children, many died and there were often seven to as many as fourteen funerals a day. Typhoid fever claimed their parents as well. They died on the leases, on the same land as the richest mine in Australia.
