Cyclone Althea Plaque

The plaque recognises the gratitude of Townsville citizens to the Australian Army for its help during Cyclone Althea in 1971.

Cyclone Althea hit the North on Christmas eve 1971 and, until Cyclone Tracey hit Darwin three years later, was considered the worst ever cyclone to hit a populated area in Australia.

This plaque records the sincere gratitude and appreciation of all Townsville people for the outstanding contribution made by Officers and men of the Australian Army in Townsville towards the recovery of this City from the serious damage and  losses caused by Cyclone Althea on Friday, December 24, 1971.
