Nymboida TakeoverPrint Page
The plaque commemorates the Nymboida takeover.
In 1975, 30 underground mine workers refused to accept the sack and the loss of their entitlements when their employer said it would close the mine. The revolt was followed by tough negotiations between the Miners Union, the Company and the New South Wales Government finally ending with the ownership of the mine being transferred to the Miners Federation in payment of the Company`s debts. Nymboida Colliery was successfully run by the Union and the workers for four and a half years. The takeover of the mine saved the workers jobs and allowed them to receive their full entitlement when the mine closed in 1979.
