The monument commemorates the first Socialist League in Australia and its first secretary E.J.Brady. Brady set up a co-operative land settlement scheme for unemployed men in Mallacoota in 1933. The scheme ended in failure.
In 1909 journalist, balladist and secretary of Australia`s first Socialist League, E.J Brady, set up a writers and artists camp in Mallacoota. Brady`s guests at the camp included Henry Lawson, who stayed in 1910 while recovering from alcoholism, as well as Katherine Susannah Prichard and the playwright Louis Esson.
Brady remained in the area until his death in 1952.
