Proclamation Island CairnPrint Page

Photographs supplied by Eric Douglas
The cairn commemorates the naming of the area for the British Crown by Sir Douglas Mawson on 13 January 1930. The cairn erected by Mawson at the time to commemorate the event has been designated a Historic Site of Monument (HSM 3) following a proposal by Australia to the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting.
In 1929-31, Mawson led two summer voyages of the British, Australian and New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition (BANZARE) in the Discovery. Extensive BANZARE voyages along the Antarctic coast resulted in British territorial claims which a few years later were transferred to Australia.
