Front Inscription

   The Wathaurong people 
     were part of the Kulin 
who lived in the Port Phillip area 
     for over 40,000 years.

     On 31 January 1802 
First Mate William Bowen and five men 
in the launch of HMS Lady Nelson 
  were the first recorded 
Europeans to enter Port Phillip Bay.

This plaque has been placed in recognition of the 
bicentenary of this event by Borough of Queenscliffe,
      Queenscliffe Maritime Museum Inc,
