Naming of Brown`s RiverPrint Page 
The memorial commemorates the naming of Brown`s River after Robert Brown, a botanist, acknowledged as the leading British botanist to collect in Australia during the first half of the 19th century.
Brown spent six months botanising in Southern Tasmania in the very earliest days of Hobart Town. Brown`s journey to Australia was his only expedition. He was appointed the curator of Sir Joseph Bank`s collection and library at Soho in 1810 and when Banks died in 1820 possession passed over to Brown. He founded what is now known as the Department of Botany in the Natural History Museum, London and came to be regarded as the greatest botanist of the century
