The memorial was erected over the grave in memory of Edward T. Fricker, formerly a member of "The Argus" literary staff and editor of "The Australian" who died in 1917. The memorial was erected by the Yorick Club of which he was a member. 
 
Note: The Yorick Club was a gentlemen's club in Melbourne, Australia, whose membership consisted originally of men involved in the arts and sciences. It was founded in 1868.
