The oval was named in honour of W. J. (Bill) Joyce, for his contribution to the community. Mr Joyce who was a successful apple grower died in 2005.
He worked for the community in many ways and on many committees, and held various positions on the Memorial Park Committee and other a number of other community committees. He was a Councillor for the community.
He is credited with the notion of the Apple and Pear Festival and in the 1990′s was the host for the bus tours of the district held during the Festivals.
