The sculpture commemorates Bessie Mabel Rischbieth who was involved in civil rights and conservation throughout her lifetime in Perth, promoting the Citizens Committee for the Preservation of Kings Park and the Swan River.

She championed for the preservation of the Swan River and is best known for taking stand against its reclamation to build the Narrows Bridge.
