The gates were erected at the park in memory of William Stacey who donated the land for the recreation ground in 1903. The park also bears his name.
An innovation for this year's sports was the introduction of trotting on a temporary track adjacent to the main oval. Mr. Ken Mathews, of Pirie, controlled the three races conducted, for which there were numerous scratchings. Spencer Puller's Grey Morn was responsible for a sound performance in winning the Appila Free-for-All, principal event on the card.
Parliamentarians who attended the meeting were Messrs. A. L. McEwin (Chief Secretary), J. G. Jenkins (Minister of Agriculture), C. S. Hincks (Minister of Lauds), J. A. Heaslip, M.P.. and W. W. Robinson, M.L.C. Before resumption after the luncheon interval Mr. Heaslip; in the presence of a large crowd, officially opened the new memorial gates to Stacey Park, erected in memory of the founder of the park, the late Mr. William Stacey. Mr. Heaslip paid tribute to the grand manner in which the pioneers of Appila sports had been followed by the officials of the present day, in some instances three generations being concerned.
