The plaque commemorates Professor David Brown who was the founding Professor of the Department of Geology at the Australian National University. Professor Brown was also a former Dean of the Faculty of Science, and the University’s first Dean of Students.

The Engineering Building was once the Geology Building, and the entrance is still entered via a small grove of Chinese Elms (Ulmus parviflora) that were planted by Professor Brown.
