The Copper sculpture, designed by the girls of the First Form in 1970, and a fountain were erected in tribute from the pupils past and present to Bessie Mitchell the first principal of the school who retired in 1970. Cheltenham Girls' High School was established as a local comprehensive high school in 1958.
The founding principal, Miss Bessie Mitchell, an outstanding educator, was later awarded an MBE for her services to education. In September 1998 the school was saddened by her death but more significantly, inspired by her life and her importance to the school.
