Major Thomas Mitchell Print Page 
The cairn commemorates Major Thomas Mitchell who passed through the area in 1836.
Memorials to mark the journeys of Major Mitchell through the shire oi Ararat are to be erected on the site of the camp at Pomonal, on the summit of Mount William (which the explorer named), and at Willaura and Buangor. They will be erected, in the coming autumn.
