The Statue commemorates Edmund Rice, the founder of the Christian Brothers.
Edmund Ignatius Rice (1 June 1762 – 29 August 1844), was an Irish born Roman Catholic missionary and educationalist. Edmund was the founder of two orders of religious brothers: the Congregation of Christian Brothers and the Presentation Brothers.
He was declared Venerable in 1993 by His Holiness Pope John Paul II.
