The bronze relief sculpture and plaque commemorate Sir James Martin, who was three times Premier of New South Wales between 1863 and 1872, and Chief Justice of New South Wales 1873 to 1876 after whom Martin Place was named.
The plaque is mounted on a high pillar faced with marble with a bronze relief medallion portrait head of Martin sculpted by Thomas Woolner in 1854.
Note: This memorial was replaced by a statue of Sir James Martin as a young boy in 2020.
