Captain Arthur PhillipPrint Page
The plaque was erected in 1983, by the committee celebrating the Centenary of German-Australian Institutions, in memory of the son of a German from Frankfurt.
Arthur Phillip, admiral and governor, was born on 11 October 1738 in the parish of Allhallows, London, the second child of Jacob Phillip, a language teacher who came to London from Frankfurt, and Elizabeth, née Breach, former wife of Captain Herbert, R.N., a relative of Lord Pembroke.
Phillip became the Governor of New South Wales, the first European colony on the Australian continent, and was the founder of the site which is now the city of Sydney.
