The monument commemorates local police constable George Gilding who died on the 5th May 1945.
In December 1934 following a period of wild weather, the most disastrous floods to have affected Victoria left over 1,500 homeless in the Chelsea district. Police Constable George Gilding was one of three policemen who between them rescued over 100 people.
