Pease narrowly won the North Queensland seat of Herbert in the Legislative Assembly in 1920 and held it till 1940, with substantial majorities from 1932. When Labour was returned to power in Queensland under Forgan Smith in June 1932 Pease became Deputy Premier and Lands Minister.
