The gates to the entrance of the Memorial Park were erected by public subsciption to commemorate King George V. 

George V (3 June 1865 – 20 January 1936) was King of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions, and Emperor of India, from 6 May 1910 through the First World War (1914–1918) until his death in 1936.

The Blackheath Municipal Council has decided to erect King George V. Memorial Gates at the Park Avenue entrance to the Soldiers' Memorial Park. The gates will be of wrought iron, hung on brick pillars, with the letters "G.R." and date 1910-1936 in copper. The cost has been defrayed by public subscription.
