The sculpture commemorates Alex Griffiths who founded Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary in 1947.

Alex Griffiths started what would become one of Queensland’s leading tourist attractions, then known as Currumbin Bird Sanctuary and later gifted the property to the National Trust. The wildlife park began when Alex Griffiths, a beekeeper and flower grower, started feeding lorikeets a mixture of honey and water to stop them raiding his prized gladioli.
