The tree and plaque commemorate early timber getters James and John Peate.
Early in 1978, the Geographical Names Board of New South Wales after representation from the Richmond River Historical Society acknowledged the validity of the claim that "Peach Mountain" was originally named "Peates Mountain" after James and John Peate who cut cedar there.
The Richmond River Historical Society organised a plaque in 1979 to commemorate the timber getters mounted on a rock near a grass tree the Society planted in 1978.
