John Campbell Miles Print Page

Photographs supplied by Bec Dent
The clock commemorates John Campbell Miles who uncovered the mineral deposits which led to the opening of the Mount Isa Mine. The clock also holds his ashes. He named the area Mount Isa in reference to his sister, Isabel.
In February 1923, as a lone prospector he discovered silver-lead-zinc ore in a low range about one kilometre across the valley from the sandy bed of the Leichhardt River in North West Queensland.
