Thomas RowlandsPrint Page
The monument erected over the grave commemorates Doctor Thomas Rowlands, who came to Ipswich in 1854.
Dr. Rowlands was an accomplished surgeon who also ran a busy medical practice in Ipswich. He identified microfilaria in the urine of a patient which was said to be of great interest to Joseph Bancroft. When he died in 1876 at the age of 54, his funeral procession was 2km in length. A poem was written in his honour and several public meetings were held to raise money for a suitable memorial. His wife Emily died in the same year.
