Major Arthur Hutchinson Print Page

The plaque on the altar commemorates Major A. J. S. Hutchinson who died in the Battle of Fromelles in France in 1916 during World War One. 

Major Arthur Justin Sanford Hutchinson, 58 Battalion AIF (formerly 9 Light Horse Regiment), was killed on 19 July 1916 when leading a charge on the German line during the Battle of Fromelles. The collection at the Australian War Memorial includes letters and a postcard sent by Hutchinson to his family in Australia, and a testimonial from Brigade Commander Elliott on Hutchinson's death in action and refers to his recommendation for award of the Victoria Cross. Hutchinson was never awarded the Victoria Cross.
