The plaque commemorates Winifred Starling who died when the S.S. Leinster was torpedoed in the Irish Sea during World War One. Winifred was a member of the Australian Army Nursing Service.
A memorial service was held in Sydney Town Hall on the 24th June 1925 to commemorate the women who lost their lives in World War One. The service coincided with the unveiling of a memorial window and screen in York Cathedral in England. The screen contains the names of the women who lost their lives including that of Winifred Starling.
