 The marble plaque commemorates Captain William Grant who was killed in the Maori Wars in 1845.
The period from 1845 to 1872 saw Pakeha and Māori involved in conflict in various parts of New Zealand, including the Bay of Islands, the Waikato, Poverty Bay and Taranaki. These conflicts, some isolated and others related, are known collectively as the New Zealand Wars.

Sacred to the memory of Captain William Grant of Her Majesty`s 58th Regiment who fell on the 1st July 1845
Aged 33 years
While gallantly leading a party of his Corps to the assault upon the Pah at Ohaewai New Zealand.
This tablet is erected by his brother Officers as a slight token of esteem and to commemorate the loss of a good soldier and a warm friend
