The marble tablet was erected in memory of Captain Rinaldo Sheberras of the 80th Regiment, who was killed in action at the Battle of Ferozeshah in 1845 within the Sikh entrenchments having seized one of their standards. While stationed in Maitland he acted as Justice of the Peace.
The Battle of Ferozeshah in 1845 was one of the most bitterly contested battles ever fought by the British in India.
