Australia’s first and only Aboriginal fighter pilot, Flight Sergeant Leonard Waters is commemorated by Len Waters Place.
Len Waters flew 95 combat missions in Borneo and Dutch New Guinea during World War Two, serving with kittyhawks in 78 Fighter Squadron. The first aircraft to which he was assigned had already been named Black Magic even before he took over its controls. He was born at Euraba Mission in northern New South Wales, leaving school at the age of 13 to become a ringbarker and then a shearer. He applied for a house with the housing commission and was given one in Inala in August 1956. He eventually bought it and lived there for more than 33 years.
