The Memorial at the Cultana Military base training facility commemorates Lance Corporal Mason Edwards who was accidentally shot dead during a 'live' firing exercise while training for his third tour of duty in Afghanistan. The 15 tonne rock for the memorial was flown in by a Chinook helicopter. The plaque includes a quote from a letter Lance-Corporal Edwards wrote during his last deployment to Afghanistan

Lance Corporal Edwards was killed when shot in the head, and another soldier was seriously injured, while taking part in a night-time firing exercise at Cultana training area on the 29th October 2009. Five soldiers were charged under the Defence Force Discipline Act after the incident.
