The rose garden commemorates Private Ken Sketchley, the first Australian soldier killed in the Korean War.

Private Ken Sketchley of Collie, died on 3 October 1950 when his Bren Gun Carrier tripped a land mine  He was a member of the 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment which had arrived in Korea only four days previously.
