The plaque commemorates Silas Johnston Smyth who was the Sacristan of the church for twenty-five years.
Mr Silas Johnson Smyth, for 20 years sacristan at St. Peter's, Eastern Hill, died last night in Royal Melbourne Hospital. He had been ill for some time. Mr Smyth was known to most of St. Peter's congregation as Jack. He will be buried at Fawkner Cemetery after a service at St. Peter's at 10.15 a m. on Monday.

Note: A sacristan is the officer of the church in charge of the sacristy and its contents, such as the sacred vessels and vestments. The person may be either someone in holy orders, as is common in a cathedral, or a lay person.
