The plaque commemorates John Gordon Balfour (1872 - 1936) who was a member of the church from 1919 to 1936.
He was an elder of the Flinders Street Church and, for 17 years, Preses (Presiding Chairman) of the congregation, chairing Board of Management and congregational meetings, a position of considerable power. After the amalgamation in 1929 he became an elder and Preses at Scots Church.
John Balfour was a confectioner and was listed as a trustee of Scotch College when it was incorporated in 1922.
